Principal Environmental Compliance (ESG/EIA) Consultant

RINA is seeking an experienced Environmental Consultant to lead and oversee the assessment and mitigation of environmental risks associated with complex Energy, Infrastructure, and Industrial projects. You will engage with private, public and government institutions and conduct environmental compliance assessments, providing due diligence and audits to evaluate compliance with Japanese Project Financing standards.
You will not only provide expert technical guidance, but also engage with Banking institutions, who are project financing these initiatives.
As RINA’s Tokyo office expands, the position is likely to evolve into a leadership role, overseeing a growing team.
Role responsibilities:
Client Relationship Management
- Build strong external client relationships by proactively engaging with key stakeholders and providing tailored environmental solutions.
- Lead proposal preparation and bid strategy.
- Serve as the primary client contact.
- Represent RINA at industry events, conferences, and client meetings.
Environmental Consulting & Project Execution
- Lead Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies, Social (E&S) due diligence, audits, and compliance assessments to ensure alignment with national and international standards.
- Develop and implement mitigation strategies for environmental and social risks.
Coordination & Team Leadership
- Work with interdisciplinary teams to integrate environmental considerations into project development and financing.
- Potentially lead a team, contributing to hiring and team development.
Regulatory & Compliance Expertise
- Ensure compliance with Japanese and international environmental standards (i.e. IFC Performance Standards, ADB/EBRD or Equator Principles).
- Prepare reports for investors, lenders, and government agencies.
Experience required
- 10+ years’ experience in environmental consulting (i.e. leading EIAs / E&S due diligence and conducting compliance assessments).
- Experience of leading and coordinating projects across multiple stakeholders and organisations.
- Preferable experience of working with financial institutions ensuring compliant EIA project financing standards.
- Bachelors or Masters degree, preferably in Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science or equivalent
- Japanese mother tongue required, and fluency in English.
