Human Factors Senior Consultant, Defence

RINA is looking for an experienced Human Factors specialist to join a specialist and growing team working for its Defence clients across the Air, Land, Maritime and Cyber domains. This is an exciting opportunity to help develop and shape RINA’s Human Factors capability in a rapidly growing environment.
This role can be based out of our Swindon or Leatherhead offices though RINA has adopted a smart working policy, so living within commuter distance of the office is not necessarily required.
The Human Factors team in Space & Defence works with Ministry of Defence, and Defence prime contractors. Examples of our current and recent work include:
- HFI support to an equipment supplier developing a new military software application.
- HF and Training input to improve human performance by use of future technologies, such as machine learning.
- Conducting HF analysis for nuclear systems focusing on human error analysis and the application of training interventions in a high-risk industry.
The role
- You will lead a wide variety of Human Factors projects using a range of techniques to meet our broad customer needs. This could include (but not limited to) Human Factors Integration (HFI), Human Factors Engineering and usability (UX), Human Sciences research or Human Factors in safety and training needs analysis.
- Manage HF projects through the full cycle, operating either as an individual or leading small teams.
- Identify innovative solutions to enhance the human component of capability; consult with clients through the project delivery phase to implement the solutions.
- Support tender and bidding activities.
- Promote RINA’s Human Factors capability to customers through face-to-face liaison and presentations.
- Support and mentor junior consultants and help raise awareness of HF more broadly across the organisation.
Qualifications & experience
- A recognised degree or post-graduate qualification in Human Factors / Ergonomics, or equivalent discipline.
- An understanding of MOD’s HFI process.
- Some knowledge of UK HF defence standards and publications (e.g. Def Stan 00-251 HFI for Defence Systems, JSP 912 HFI for Defence Systems or JSP 536 Defence Research involving Human Participants).
- Good working knowledge of BS EN ISO 9241 suite of standards on User/Human-Centred Design.
- Experience in undertaking Human Factors projects with demonstrable competence in the application of one or more HF methodologies, principles and techniques such as:
- HMI and HCI design and evaluation
- Human performance assessment and evaluation, e.g. workload analysis, for user trials
- Physical ergonomics analysis
- User Experience / Usability
- Tasks analysis, Cognitive Work Analysis, user research
- Human Error Identification / Human Reliability Assessment
- Quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis
- Safety culture assessment
- Training effectiveness evaluation
- Ideally you will have UK Security Clearance, or you must be a British citizen and be prepared to go through vetting.
