RINA is currently recruiting for a China Senior Machinery Plan Approval Engineer to join its office in Shanghai, China within the North Asia Marine Division.

Mission

This role focuses on performing detailed plan and design reviews, resolving issues related to conflicting design requirements, ensuring client requirements and applicable standards are met

Projects could include the approval of new building, conversion, and existing vessels and yachts.

Key Accountabilities

  • Review and approve drawings of machinery and related systems on ships, offshore units, and marine equipment, in compliance with Class Rules and Statutory Regulations, for new buildings, ships in service, and ship’s conversions.
  • Assist clients during the design and construction phase, providing guidance and support related to machinery and related systems.
  • Resolve issues related to conflicting design requirements and material standards.
  • Perform  assessments and provide specialist advice for service delivery, research or development work within agreed broad parameters that include budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • Oversee and manage day-to-day project elements, visit sites to take measurements.
  • Ensure correct and up-to-date data is used and complete documentation is submitted to officials and other day-to-day duties.
  • Review the project deliverables (technical reports, project performance documentations and engineering drawings, etc.).
  • Review progress reports and take appropriate action to ensure requirements are met.
  • Take ownership and responsibility over the financial progress of assigned tasks. 
  • Understand and apply project management concepts providing feedback to project manager, serve as reference for the escalation of issues.
  • Manage simple and complex projects assigned applying project management concepts and techniques.
  • Assess complex structural problems for internal/external clients to determine solutions.
  • Answer complex contractor questions on behalf of the supervising engineer, and serve as liaisons between engineering and construction personnel.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Engineering

Qualifications

Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in marine machinery systems design, installation, and approval, with a focus on machinery plan approval and regulatory compliance.
- Extensive experience in reviewing and approving machinery plans for various types of vessels (e.g., commercial ships, tankers, offshore vessels, and passenger ships).
- Hands-on experience in assessing the compliance of propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, power generation equipment, and safety-related machinery.
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of marine machinery systems, including propulsion, auxiliary engines, pumps, HVAC, fuel systems, and other mechanical systems on board vessels.
- Expertise in reviewing machinery design documents and plans, including technical specifications, machinery layout, and installation drawings.
- Proficiency in machinery system analysis, including thermal, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
- Familiarity with software tools used in machinery design and simulation (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or specific marine design software).
