Internship - Bridge Designer

Mission

The candidate will join the team of Road and Bridge Design within the BU Infrastructure.

Activities

The candidate will prepare his thesis in the field of "assessment of existing bridges" with particular references to the application of the new Italian Guidelines for the assessment and monitoring of existing bridges.

The focus of the research will be the cost benefit analysis and comparison of two different solutions for the intervention on an existing bridge: a) retrofit of the existing bridge b) substitution of the existing bridge. A possible list of the activities is 

• Prepare finite element bridge models considering the applicable Italian and International codes;

• Analysis and design of bridges and viaducts (steel-concrete composite bridges, concrete bridges)

•  Assessment and retrofit of existing bridges

• Prepare the technical specifications for in-situ material testing

• Feasibility design for the retrofit interventions: substitution and retrofit solutions
• Cost benefit analysis for both the solutions in terms of structural and seismic behavior, costs, impact on the traffic, sustainability   

Desired skills and experience:

• Hold a BSc in Civil Engineering with specialization in Structural Design

• Have basic knowledge of the Italian and International Technical Codes for bridge design (NTC2018, Eurocodes, American Codes)

• Have basic knowledge in SAP2000, Midas Civil

• Have successfully passed exams in the following items: bridge design, seismic design, r.c. structures, steel structures

• Have basic knowledge in English
