RINA is currently recruiting for a Junior Environment Plan Approval Engineer to join its office in Mumbai within the Middle East and India Marine Division.
Mission
This role support technical plan reviews and design assessments, assisting with the analysis of documentation and verification of compliance with client requirements and applicable standards. Contribute to identifying and helping resolve potential inconsistencies or conflicting requirements, working closely with the team and relevant technical stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities
- Lead research and assess the maturity of new technologies in the marine industry related to carbon capture, CO2 transportation, non-carbon/ low carbon-based fuels, renewable energies including different machinery and systems etc.).
- Carry out the approval of plans and certification for marine pollution prevention equipment and statutory plan, in compliance with Class Rules and Statutory Regulations, for new buildings, ships in service, and ship’s conversions.
- Assist clients during the design and construction phase, providing guidance and support related to environmental aspect.
- Provide support for the elaboration of detailed marine engineering plan review, in compliance with applicable RINA rules, international conventions and contractual requirements.
- Provide support for the resolution of issues related to conflicting design requirements and material standards.

- Provide support for structural assessments and provide advice for service delivery, research or development work within agreed broad parameters that include budget constraints and contractual requirements.
- Provide direct day-to-day support and oversight of project elements, visit sites to take measurement.
- Provide direct or indirect support to engineers or engineering teams by gathering data, submitting documentation to officials and other day-to-day duties.
- Prepare the project deliverables (technical reports, project performance documentations and engineering drawings, etc.).
- Take ownership and responsibility over the financial progress of assigned tasks.
- Understand and apply project management concepts providing feedback to project manager.
- Assess minor structural problems for internal/external clients to determine solutions with minimal supervision
- Answer contractor questions on behalf of the supervising engineer, and serve as liaisons between engineering and construction personnel.
Education
Qualifications

- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical/ marine/ environmental engineering or other related discipline; M.S. is preferred.
-Extensive hands-on experience (3-5 years) working on environmental compliance matters, ideally on board ships or in a marine-related environment.
-Knowledge of onboard machinery and systems is a plus, including emerging technologies such as carbon capture (both pre- and post-combustion), CO2 transportation, ammonia crackers, methane reformers, methane slip, renewable energies, electrolyzers, and energy-saving devices. Also, basic understanding of marine piping systems (e.g., fresh water, sea water, lubrication oil, fuel oil, compressed air, hydraulic system, cryogenics piping, etc.
-Knowledge of general mechanical systems.
-General knowledge of environmental engineering.
-Awareness of alternative marine fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, synthetic fuel, and biofue,l etc.
-Awareness of fuel cell technology and application.
-Awareness of emerging technologies and trends in the marine industry, including emerging engines, fuels, power generation, and energy savings.
- In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations and best practices related to marine operations (e.g., MARPOL, IMO conventions).
- Strong understanding of environmental management systems (EMS) and procedures for the approval of environmental plans.
- Experience with marine environmental technologies such as waste management, ballast water treatment, air emissions, and pollution control systems.
- Ability to conduct inspections, assess compliance, and review environmental documentation on board ships or in operational settings.
- Capable of interpreting environmental regulations and applying them to various marine operations.
- Knowledge of shipboard operations and systems to evaluate environmental impact and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Excellent communication and reporting skills to interact with clients, technical teams, and authorities.
- Ability to support senior engineers in technical tasks and environmental audits.
- Proficient in data collection and reporting for environmental monitoring purposes.
