RINA is currently recruiting for a Messina Marine Surveyor to join its office in Messina within the Mediterranean and Africa Marine Division.

Mission

A Junior Surveyor in a classification society plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, compliance, and quality of ships and marine assets.The main responsibilities are aimed at verifying that vessels meet international and classification society standards. #LI-MC1

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Regulatory Compliance: Diligently verify that all surveys comply with the latest classification society rules, international maritime regulations, and statutory requirements. Proactively adapt to evolving standards and ensure adherence across all inspections.
  • Technical Expertise: Provide competent technical guidance to clients, shipowners, and manufacturers regarding classification, design, construction, and vessel maintenance. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging technologies and industry best practices to enhance survey accuracy and relevance.
  • Problem-Solving: Identify, analyse, and resolve technical challenges encountered during inspections or in client consultations, delivering practical solutions to uphold safety and quality.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement and support quality management protocols throughout the survey process, ensuring inspection reports are precise, reliable, and consistent.
  • Client Engagement & Education: Communicate clearly with clients about classification society procedures, emphasizing the importance of compliance for vessel safety and operational efficiency. Foster strong professional relationships based on trust and transparency.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Prepare thorough reports using established templates and digital tools, guaranteeing timely submission with clear and comprehensive documentation of findings and recommendations.
  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Actively participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, exchanging knowledge and promoting best practices within RINA and with external stakeholders to support continuous improvement.
  • Professional Development: Pursue continuous learning, certifications, and training initiatives to strengthen expertise and adapt to maritime industry advancements and regulatory changes.
  • Ethical Standards: Maintain integrity, impartiality, and fairness in all survey activities, upholding RINA’s commitment to ethical conduct and fostering confidence in the inspection process.

This role also involves considerable travel (approximately 50-75%) to perform on-site surveys and assessments, providing a dynamic work environment that combines fieldwork with analytical duties.

Education

Master’s Degree in Naval Engineering

Qualifications

•    In general, minimum 1/2 years’experience in the engineering or survey fields within the marine industry or other applicable industry to their specialization.
•    Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of classification, statutory certification, related services and, before assignment, with their future work.
•    Ability to develop a working knowledge of RINA Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and related
instructions, as well as the RINA Employee Safety Policy.
•    Ability to understand engineering plans and have basic knowledge of shipbuilding practices and ship operations.
•    Ability, in general, to perform either,
1)    new building surveys:
−    to assess the suitability of certified materials and products supplied for the new building,
−    to assess that hull, machinery and equipment have been built in compliance with rules and regulations by means of compulsory inspections, tests and trials,
−    to issue Certificates, Reports, Records and Status in compliance with rules and regulations.
And/or:
2)    ship in service surveys:
−    to assess that hull, machinery and equipment have been maintained in compliance with rules and
regulations by means of compulsory overall inspections, tests and trials,
−    to identify the deficiencies to be rectified (if any) and assess whether immediate repair is necessary or a condition may be issued with an appropriate due date,
−    to follow-up as required by rules and regulations any repair work or due to previous outstanding
conditions,
−    to assess whether the deficiencies identified (if any) may be linked with potential failure of the Ship
Management System,
−    to endorse Certificates, issue Reports and Status in compliance with rules and regulations.
And/or:
3)    Marine Management Systems audits
And/or:
4)    testing activities and service suppliers/manufacturers certification:
−    to assess the suitability of certified materials and products in compliance with applicable rules
−    to issue Certificates and prepare Reports and Status in compliance with procedures.
•    Knowledge of ships' engineering systems and machinery.
•    Knowledge of computer programs or software packages related to job responsibilities.
•    Knowledge of related technical interfaces required for group project work.
