Senior Engineer, Power System Protection Controls

RINA is looking for a highly experienced Power Systems Senior Consultant / Engineer to lead and manage multiple projects for large power and electricity corporations. The portfolio is broad, advising clients on complex issues in the substation design arena, with a focus on protection controls (PSPC). This is an exciting opportunity to develop your career in a growing Power Systems capability group in the UK, with opportunity to work on international projects also.  

This role can be based out of our Manchester, Leatherhead or Brighton offices though RINA is smart/hybrid working organisation. Moderate travel across the UK is required though.
 
Responsibilities include:  

  • Provide project management, technical input and leadership on a variety of projects for distribution and transmission networks, renewable energy, and grid integration, including Power system planning, grid connection studies, protection and substation design. 
  • Despite working across the Power Systems enterprise, the core focus will be to deliver Power Systems Protection Control (PSPC) for substations. 
  • Undertake grid analysis using relevant simulation software. 
  • Minimise power outages by using protection control devices. 
  • Work closely with clients, sub-contractors and other design engineers. 
  • Arrange meetings and communicate with clients to establish their needs. 
  • Produce drawings using software packages like CAD, REVIT; Prepare and co-ordinate electrical reports and specifications. 
  • Review project design, contractual documentation, environmental studies, planning permission, health and safety reports, grid offers and grid connection agreements. 
  • Contribute towards the submission of high-quality bids and proposals to existing and potential clients. 

 

Qualifications & experience 

  • Hold a minimum of a BEng or MEng degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or other relevant technical discipline. 
  • Possess a good understanding of Power System theory. 
  • Knowledge of HV equipment and substation design. 
  • Possess an understanding of transmission and distribution grids (LV to 400 kV), grid code requirements and industry accepted practices and grid connection processes. 
  • Experience of developing and reviewing Time Current Curves (TCC). 
  • Proficient with modern simulation software and electrical circuit modelling tools e.g. PSS/E, DigSILEN, Powerfactory, ETAP etc.   
  • Ability to work effectively within a flexible team environment on multi-disciplinary projects. 
  • Able to quickly develop successful client stakeholders including Chief Engineers and Technical Project Managers. 
  • Up to date knowledge and experience in most of the following areas: 
    • Medium/High/EHV Voltage Transmission/Distribution Systems 
    • Electrical SLD, Protection MCP 
    • AC/DC Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, Cable Schedules, Block Diagrams 
    • LV Cable Sizing, Battery Sizing Calculations 
    • HV Plant Specifications and review of manufacturer drawings 
    • Protection Settings and Controls
