RINA is currently recruiting for a Power System Design Senior Consultant to join its office in Manchester within the Consulting Country UK Division.

Overview

The Senior Consultant will provide technical input into multiple projects and will also lead small project teams. Providing technical studies input for a range of projects involving UK and international clients. The work will focus on the delivery of Conceptual / Feasibility Study and Design, System Studies, Protection and Substation Design projects around the world.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the whole project scope of work or for specific project task;
Assess clients’ needs and translate them into designs, equipment, or new systems under the supervision of a consultant. From the initial concept stage through to completion, they manage project timelines and oversee all developments;
Plan technical solution: engineering consultants find unique ways to resolve technical issues without affecting the overall completion deadline or affecting the involvement from other departments or external companies;
Develop project schedules and deliverable timelines;
Coordinate and communicate projects group as needed on major projects in the Business Units;
Responsible for the production and the performance of assigned projects, under the coordination of the Principal Consultant;
Ensure the creation of documents and reports that detail their assessments, any fact-finding survey data acquired, the project’s inception, and concept planning;
Monitor engineering progress against budget and forecasted schedule;
Effectively manage multiple projects and conflicting deadlines;
Prepare project estimates, budget, schedules and execution plans;
Support the continued development of more junior team personnel providing technical guidance;
Responsible for the development of the technical competencies. When belonging to the engineering competencies, supports the Principal Consultant in a specific technical development or in growing competencies and training personnel;
Be aware and understand the Quality Policy. Ensure that all assigned activities are executed in accordance with the RINA QMS. Be aware of the quality of his own work and its impact on service delivery and contribute to the QMS improvement according to his/her role;
Interact with clients and colleagues to achieve project objectives using appropriate technical judgment;
Able to discuss and define client requirements; reflecting a clear understanding in well written technical reports and proposals;
Actively support business development activities; building relationships with clients and helping to generate new business.

Experience

  • Experienced in a power system engineering environment
  • Track record on static and dynamic power system studies
  • Track record in design and specification of HV substation equipment would be an advantage
  • Proficient with modern simulation software and electrical circuit modelling tools e.g. PSS/E, DigSILENT Powerfactory, ETAP, ERACS etc. 
  • Ability to work effectively within a flexible team environment
  • Experience in design of datacentres, substations, UG Cables, OHL projects will be preferred
  • Extensive experience in the field of electrical design and experience across a range of small/medium to large scale projects and / or building types
  • Experience of operating within electrical teams on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Able to understand the balance of engineering priorities on differing projects
  • Able to quickly develop successful client relationships
  • Up to date knowledge and experience in most of the following areas: 

                    - Medium/High/EHV Voltage Transmission/Distribution Systems

                    - Electrical SLD, Protection MCP

                    - AC/DC Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, Cable Schedules, Block Diagrams

                    - LV Cable Sizing, Battery Sizing Calculations

                    - HV Plant Specifications and review of manufacturer drawings

                    - Protection Settings

                    - M & E Building Services Design 

Qualifications

  • Hold a minimum of a BEng or MEng degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or other relevant technical discipline
  • Hold Chartered Engineer status or be working towards it.
  • Possess a good understanding of power system theory
  • Possess an understanding of transmission and distribution grids (LV to 400 kV) around the world, grid code requirements and industry accepted practices and grid connection processes
  • Knowledge of Laplace controller models and their operation
  • Knowledge of HV equipment and substation design
  • Experienced in a power system engineering environment
  • Track record on static and dynamic power system studies
  • Track record in design and specification of HV substation equipment would be an advantage

  • Ability to work effectively within a flexible team environment
