RINA is currently recruiting for a Senior Cable Engineering Consultant to join its office in Leatherhead within the Materials, Technology & Innovation Division


RINA is one of the leading cable engineering consultancy services in the UK and we are looking for an experienced Cable Engineering Consultant to join our team in Leatherhead, Surrey. This is an exciting opportunity for a cable engineer who is looking to apply their knowledge and experience to a wide variety of projects including design, testing, and failure investigation of high and low voltage cable systems.  Our projects span multiple industries including onshore and offshore renewables, oil and gas, transport, and power transmission and distribution.


Although primarily a cable engineering role there is scope to work on projects across other high and low voltage electrical asset types in which RINA specialises, for example switchgear, power transformers and instrument transformers.


This role combines office-based projects with hands-on laboratory and site-based activities. You will manage projects from the point of discussing requirements with potential customers and writing technical and commercial proposals, through to carrying out technical work and ultimately writing and delivering reports.  The role will involve occasional UK and international travel.

Examples of office-based projects include:

  • Design calculations including cable current ratings and induced voltages.
  • Independent third-party reviews of design documentation, technical papers and reports.


Examples of laboratory-based projects include:

  • Testing a range of equipment and materials including high and low voltage cables and accessories.
  • Root cause failure investigation of electrical equipment including high voltage cables and accessories.


Examples of site-based projects include:

  • Technical and quality audits of cable and accessory manufacturing facilities.
  • Forensic investigations at locations such as commercial premises, renewable energy installations and large industrial sites.


In addition to the project management and technical work the role also encourages undertaking activities such as business development and attendance at conferences and technical events.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree qualified (minimum 2:1) or higher (MEng, MSc or PhD) in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM subject.
  • Full UK Driving licence.


Knowledge and Experience Required:

  • A strong working knowledge of electrical engineering principles
  • Strong high voltage cable engineering experience which may have been gained through gained through time spent in design, manufacturing and/or previous consultancy roles
  • Experience of additional electrical asset types would be an advantage
  • Previous experience with managing and delivering projects, including interacting with stakeholders
  • Previous experience with undertaking business development activities would be an advantage
