Malaysia Principal Marine Surveyor in Charge

RINA is currently recruiting for a Malaysia Principal Marine Surveyor in Charge to join its office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia within the South Asia Pacific Marine Division.
Mission
Key role responsible for maintaining the integrity, safety, and compliance of maritime assets while ensuring the effective management of surveying operations.
Leads and oversees the application of Rules, Regulations, and industry principles, ensuring the highest standards in maritime safety and compliance. Acting as a professional specialist, the Principal Surveyor in Charge is responsible for the quality and effectiveness of surveying processes. This role involves providing leadership, guidance, and training to less experienced surveyors, contributing to the development and improvement of surveying practices, and achieving operational objectives while maintaining strong client relationships.
Key Accountabilities
In addition to the key accountabilities foreseen for the Principal Surveyor, or to a more detailed extent, the Principal Surveyor in Charge implements also the following:
1. Leadership, Management and Coordination:
- Manages and coordinates operational, technical, and administrative activities related to class and statutory surveys and certification
- Supervises and leads a team of surveyors to ensure efficient and effective performance.
2. Objective Achievement:
- Oversees the achievement of quality, technical, and operative objectives in line with the organization's standards and goals.
- Implements and monitors procedures to maintain and improve the quality of surveying services.
3. Technical Verification:
- Conducts local control, verifying the technical consistency of documents/reports and certificates prepared by the surveyors
- Ensures that classed/certified ships comply with international rules and classification society rules and standards.
4. Customer and Authority Interaction:
- Provides technical assistance to customers, offering guidance on compliance issues, survey procedures, and necessary corrective actions, while maintaining conformance with class/statutory requirements.
- Interacts with local authorities to ensure that regulatory requirements are understood and followed.
5. Problem Resolution:
- Resolves technical issues and challenges related to the surveying and classification process.
- Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to address and rectify non-compliance or safety concerns.
6. Continuous Improvement:
- Identifies areas for improvement in surveying processes and procedures.
- Implements changes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of surveying operations.
7. Training and Development:
- Provides guidance and training to surveyors to enhance their skills and knowledge.
- Stays abreast of industry developments and ensures that the surveying team is informed about relevant changes in regulations and standards.
8. Documentation and Reporting:
- Ensures accurate and timely documentation of survey activities.
- Prepares reports for internal and external use, summarizing survey findings, conditions, and compliance status.
9. Audit and Inspection:
- Participates in internal and external audits to assess the compliance with classification and statutory requirements
- Collaborates with auditors and inspectors to address any findings and implement corrective actions.
Education
Qualifications
- In general, minimum 3 years’ experience working as a Principal Surveyor. Substantial experience in marine surveying and classification, minimum 12 years with an IACS member Classification Society.
- Experience in progressively responsible roles within a classification society or a similar maritime organization.
- Professional certifications related to marine surveying, classification, or relevant fields are highly valued. For example, certification from bodies such as the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) or other relevant industry organizations.
- In-depth knowledge of international maritime regulations, classification society rules, and industry standards.
- Strong technical expertise in ship design, construction, maintenance, and repair.
- Soft skills pertinent to effective people management and client interaction
- Good knowledge of administrative activities pertaining to the local organization unit
- Proficiency in the English language commensurate with their future work
