RINA is currently recruiting for a Houston Principal Marine Surveyor to join its office in Houston, Texas within the North America Marine Division.
Mission
The Principal Surveyor serves as an experienced and highly knowledgeable professional within the organization, applying expertise in maritime Rules, Regulations, and industry principles.The Principal Surveyor plays a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy, quality, and continuous improvement of surveying processes.
Acting as a professional specialist, provides guidance and training to less experienced surveyors, contributing to the development and improvement of surveying practices, and achieving operational objectives while maintaining strong client relationships.#LI-MM4
Key Accountabilities
1. Professional Specialist:
- Acts as a professional specialist, applying comprehensive knowledge of Rules, Regulations, and industry concepts within the organization's framework.
- Keeps abreast of new developments and recommends changes to surveying processes and safety programs.
2. Inspection and Reporting:
- Conducts routine surveys on classed ships, offshore installations, or marine assets, ensuring compliance with classification and statutory requirements.
- Prepares technically accurate and timely reports of inspections and surveys.
3. Continuous Learning and Improvement:
- Maintains an active awareness of new working methods and developments, recommending changes to surveying processes and safety programs based on industry advancements.
- Recommends new approaches to problems encountered and initiates changes in working methods and procedures as necessary.
4. Leadership and Coordination:
- Plans, schedules, and coordinates various phases of surveying work, ensuring the quality of service on work performed.
- Monitors work and projects performed by less experienced surveyors to ensure consistency, continuity, and high-quality outcomes.
5. Project Team Management and Training:
- Provides leadership, guidance, and training to less experienced surveyors.
6. Quality Assurance:
- Monitors work and projects performed by less experienced surveyors, ensuring the maintenance of quality, content, consistency, and continuity of work performed.
7. Problem Resolution and Innovation:
- Recommends new approaches to problems encountered and initiates changes in working methods and procedures as necessary.
- Actively contributes to the development and enhancement of surveying practices.
9. Client Interaction:
- Engages with clients to solve problems within the area of expertise.
- Maintains strong client relationships, ensuring client satisfaction through effective communication and resolution of issues.
10. Ethical Conduct:
- Uphold the highest ethical standards in all professional interactions, ensuring integrity, transparency, and fairness in survey processes.
Education
Qualifications
• In general, minimum 3 years’ experience working as a Senior Surveyor. Substantial experience in marine surveying and classification, minimum 9 years with an IACS member Classification Society.
• Understanding of RINA strategic technical positioning in the sector of the marine industry
• Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of classification, statutory certification, related services and, before assignment, with their future work.
• Ability to develop a working knowledge of RINA Rules, Guides, statutory regulations and related
instructions, as well as the RINA Employee Safety Policy.
• Ability to understand engineering plans and have deep knowledge of shipbuilding practices and ship operations.
• Ability, in general, to perform either,
1) new building surveys:
− to assess the suitability of certified materials and products supplied for the new building,
− to assess that hull, machinery and equipment have been built in compliance with rules and regulations by means of compulsory inspections, tests and trials,
− to issue Certificates, Reports, Records and Status in compliance with rules and regulations.
And/or:
2) ship in service surveys:
− to assess that hull, machinery and equipment have been maintained in compliance with rules and
regulations by means of compulsory overall inspections, tests and trials,
− to assess and follow-up the repair works to hull, machinery and equipment to assign a new period of class and a new period of validity to statutory Certificates in compliance with rules and regulations by means of overall and close-up inspections, verification upon dismantling, tests and trials (including surveys for Admission to Class of ships in service),
− to attend major conversion works according with rules and regulations,
− to identify the deficiencies to be rectified (if any) and assess whether immediate repair is necessary or a condition may be issued with an appropriate due date,
− to follow-up as required by rules and regulations any repair work or due to previous outstanding
conditions,
− to assess whether the deficiencies identified (if any) may be linked with potential failure of the Ship
Management System,
− to endorse Certificates, issue Reports and Status in compliance with rules and regulations.
And/or
3) Marine Management Systems audits
And/or:
4) Ability to perform testing activities and service suppliers/manufacturers certification:
− to assess the suitability of certified materials and products in compliance with applicable rules
− to issue Certificates and prepare Reports and Status in compliance with procedures.
• Knowledge of ship engineering systems and machinery.
• Knowledge of computer programs or software packages related to job responsibilities.
• Knowledge of related technical interfaces required for group project work.
