RINA is currently recruiting for a Senior Rail Project Engineer to join its office in Genoa, Italy within the Project Engineering Division.​

Mission

The Senior Rail Project Engineer leads the technical execution of complex, multidisciplinary railway projects, ensuring that all technical aspects—from concept to delivery—are seamlessly integrated to meet client and project requirements. 
The role provides advanced technical guidance across design, operation, planning, and consultancy activities, maintaining oversight of integrated engineering deliverables and ensuring quality and compliance. 
Acting as a senior expert within the team, this position supports strategic decision-making, mentors junior engineers, and drives continuous improvement and innovation in project execution. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Proposal Phase 

Lead technical feasibility assessments for complex rail projects, identifying requirements, operational constraints, and strategic opportunities. 

Integrate multidisciplinary engineering inputs—including planning, operations, design, and consultancy—to strengthen proposal competitiveness. 

Define technical resources, timelines, and skills needed for accurate project estimation. 

  • Technical Implementation 

Oversee technical delivery of railway engineering projects, ensuring alignment with quality, contractual obligations, and milestones. 

Manage and resolve complex technical issues, providing high-level engineering solutions. 

Review progress and implement strategic adjustments to technical plans when required. 

  • Technical Team Leadership 

Coordinate engineering teams in task allocation, performance monitoring, and interdisciplinary collaboration. 

Foster a cohesive environment among internal teams and subcontractors to ensure project integration. 

Interact with Discipline Managers to optimise resource allocation and team deployment. 

  • Quality Control 

Define and enforce quality control protocols to ensure technical deliverables meet the highest engineering standards. 

Identify and address deviations promptly, working alongside quality assurance teams. 

  • Compliance 

Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks, rail standards, and industry best practices. 

Anticipate compliance risks and implement early mitigation measures. 

  • Technical Documentation and Reporting 

Guarantee production and validation of comprehensive technical documentation. 

Prepare and oversee advanced technical reports, studies, and presentations for clients and stakeholders. 

  • Training and Mentorship 

Mentor junior and project engineers, fostering technical growth and cross-functional knowledge sharing. 

  • Stakeholder Communication 

Oversee communication among engineering teams, project management, and stakeholders, ensuring clarity on progress and challenges. 

Represent the technical function during high-level meetings with clients and leadership. 

  • Continuous Improvement 

Identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in engineering processes and methodologies. 

Incorporate lessons learned into future planning and delivery phases. 

  • Risk Management 

Identify technical risks across all phases of rail projects, evaluating impacts and defining mitigation strategies. 

Collaborate with project management to integrate risk controls into the engineering plan. 

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering General or Physics

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in the railway sector, including design, operations, planning, feasibility studies, consultancy and PMC. 
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary technical activities in complex rail projects. 
  • Broad and advanced engineering expertise with understanding of related disciplines. 
  • Strong experience in project controls (planning, budgeting, risk management). 
  • Proficiency in quality control and assurance processes. 
  • Familiarity with railway industry standards and regulatory frameworks (national and international). 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to coordinate preparation and review of technical reports. 
  • Proficiency in English.
